It’s getting to be that time of year and we all want summer ready abs!
Warmer weather, more revealing styles and advertisements galore about losing weight and getting in to your bikini.
The area of greatest concern is the look and feel of your tummy.
The way you perceive your tummy to appear affects your very being….from what you cannot wear to how you feel about yourself when you look in the mirror.
One of the biggest reasons why you struggle to get what you want -flat abs- is due to the overwhelming amount of misinformation as you search for a solution.
Take a look at the line up of magazines or even adds online:
The majority of headlines attempt to draw you in with promises of …
* lose your belly fat for good
* 4 moves to a flat tummy
* blast belly fat in 3 minutes a day
* fast belly fat burning foods
With an abundance of simple, effective, EASY resources like this, it would seem that we would have no trouble achieving satisfactory, head turning, bikini ready abs results!
Unfortunately this is not the case.
There is just too much information – enough to leave your head spinning. So we – desperate for results – end up taking bits and pieces of what we can do or maybe even what sounds new and trendy and attempt to piece together into a “workable” plan.
Yet this mismatched plan yields little to no lasting results.
Before you lose hope – again…I invite you to take a moment to realize this cycle will only continue unless you choose to end it.

Let’s get down to the bottom of the 3 Main Truths about Abs ~ what’s it really going to take to lose the stubborn mommy belly fat and get flat abs?
1. Set a Realistic Goal
Yes, anything you want to accomplish in life requires that you set a realistic goal.
In an effort to lose the tummy, it is even more essential to find out what is realistic for you. Many ads tempt us with the “too good to be true” slim, shape, and sculpt plans.
Can you really get slim down to a bikini ready bod in just 2 weeks?
Well this really depends on where you are right now, what you have been doing, what you are willing to do and what you consider to be a successful goal. Of course we ALL begin a fitness plan with the hopes of super fast results.
What we fail to factor in is the time we have spent getting the body we now inhabit. Years of overeating, under-eating, over-exercising, not exercising one bit cannot be undone in a matter of days or weeks.
So your first step forward to getting flat abs is to be realistic about what you yourself can achieve in a given amount of time.
Your goals must be coupled with the understanding that getting flat abs is a matter of losing body fat (see truths 2 and 3). Women will typically see a loss of 1-2 pound of fat per week once they implement a balanced fitness plan.
2. Nourish Your Body
What you eat, how you eat and when you eat determines how quickly you see results.
Yes, you have to eat.
It is common for busy moms to get stuck on the mindset that in order to weight less, you must eat less.
Starving yourself only teaches your body to become efficient at storing fat. Skipping meals and following a very low calorie diet only slows your metabolism and makes it extremely difficult to lose any belly fat. Not what you want to do to get your summer ready abs.
Hard to escape this mindset when after going several hours with nothing in our belly, we try to justify that empty feeling with a thinner waist-line….that is until we have our next meal, and have a bit too much since we were starving….and the cycle begins again.
To lose fat and see a reduction in your belly, you need to eat a supportive meal every 3 to 4 hours. Eating often fuels your metabolism so you have more energy and burn more calories….plus eating with frequency helps curb your cravings and helps you manage stress/emotional eating.
Eating whole natural foods – cutting out the junk, fake, processed foods - nourishes your body adding to the boost in your metabolism and energy levels plus also crushes cravings and even turns back the hands of time, blessing you with the gift of a youthful radiance.
3. Move your Body Effectively
When it comes to Exercise and Abs busy moms are often mislead by the notion that hundreds of ab exercises or hours of cardio is the solution to lose the stubborn belly fat.
Truth is, there are no magic exercises that make the belly fat go away.
There are however moves you can do to help strengthen and tighten your INNER core muscles. This is turn will help your belly to look flatter as you do continue to lose fat all over your body.
If you have been spending a LOT of time “doing abs” you can most likely flex your stomach muscles and poke with your finger to feel those firm abs you do have….underneath the layer of fat that still hides them.
Time to toss the hours spent on cardio and abs and trade them in for a more efficient and effective form of exercise.
Resistance Training & Intervals
Resistance Training: Make total body resistance training the priority of your workout plan. Total body resistance training to work your upper body, lower body and core with exercises that incorporate many muscles at once.
Muscle is the KEY to reshaping your body. Resistance training is the ONLY type of exercise that will significantly boost your metabolism so your body begins to burn more fat and calories long after your workout is finished.
Intervals: When it comes to cardio, more is not better. In fact the more cardio you do, the harder it is to see results. Intensity keeps your cardio short and burns more belly fat. Intervals are the perfect solution for Busy Moms.
Consistency is Key
Finally, along with what you choose to do for your workouts, is that you Do It.
Too often we give a new fitness plan our all….for just about a week or so – lose enthusiasm – stop doing it.
No Consistency? No Results! And no summer ready abs!
Not only must you stick to a program, but you must also keep it fresh and challenging in order to prevent a plateau.
To conclude the Truth About Abs For Moms, I also want to share that this is not a passing FAD, temporarily helping you slip into your favorite summer suit.
The strategies I outlined for you are about taking a good look at your lifestyle habits. Yes, this requires getting honest for there are things that need to change if you are wanting to see and feel a change.

~ you feel better, you have more energy, your cravings disappear
~ You want to do more, move more, be more

And within a couple weeks you feel a difference in your clothing, you are getting compliments left and right and a whole new you begins to emerge.

Hi Holly, great post. I do the FYM work outs and I also do a group crossfit program at work at lunch. We have a lot of fun and I am 2 weeks in and already can feel my body getting stronger and my tummy shrinking!
Since I met Holly, leaned how to eat clean and challenge myself with effective exercise i have lost over 13″ off my waist! Went from a size 18 to a 4 (and I think they are getting loose!) just saying, ladies- don’t think “maybe THIS is not for me!” or “nothing works on me, I feel broken” I was that lady, I said goodbye to her and never turned back. Eat clean & find/do a challenging interval cardio & resistance training program that you will enjoy & do! And you WILL have results! FYM is the real deal!

Very well said Holly! Every woman (who is struggling with weight) should read this post. I have come to realize last year that there will be no one who’ll do it for me so I just have to do it, do it, do it!! I was size 16 on Jan 2009, (still need to lose more belly fat but ) now an 8. Effort pays!
I agree with resistance training. Some women are afraid to pick up heavier DB’s in fear of bulking up. Well, my arms are SMALLER than they were 1 year back because I use heavier weights!
