Secret to a Flat Belly for Moms

1 Kristin j 1024x682 Secret to a Flat Belly for Moms

Kristin – a 38 year old Mom of 4 – shares her secret to a flat belly and to melting the muffin top.

It was a cold and dreary night in September and I should have been in bed several hours ago.  I was feeling blah and frustrated with my weight, tired of constantly trying to hide the glob of fat that hung over my pants every time I sat down, my lack of energy and my mood swings -overall, I was just plain grouchy.

I sat and stared at the computer hoping I could find something that would help me. Before I reveal what I found, I need to start from the beginning.

I have always been a very active person. Throughout my life I have participated in several sports with my favorite being track.  From a nutritional standpoint, my mother made sure we ate a very balanced diet, never bought processed food, only fruit and vegetables and she made everything from scratch.  It is because of these two factors that I didn’t really struggle with weight issues until I became a mother.

Fast forward….I married my high school sweetheart in 1993 and we had our first child in 1998.  When I became pregnant, I wanted to make sure that I stayed active, not gain too much weight, and not take long afterward to lose it.

At this time, my main form of exercise was running and I ran up until I was 8 months pregnant.  Post pregnancy, I was a bit shocked that I didn’t lose the weight as fast as I wanted to after giving birth.

Looking back, I thought I would just be “lucky” and it would just come off.

After twelve months of nursing, it didn’t just come off.  All those articles I read about nursing, who were they kidding?  I did continue to run and was able to get close to my pre-pregnancy weight.  However, I also noticed that in order to stay down

I felt I needed to run more and more.

When my son was 10 months old, I became pregnant with our second child.  Chasing around a toddler while pregnant with my 2nd made it hard to consistently exercise and get adequate sleep – I gained more weight.

It took a lot of extra effort to lose the weight too.  Being a creature of habit, I turned to running and run I did.  The effort didn’t seem to be working as I wanted – I still had the squishy, mushy middle.

Moodiness and exhaustion seemed overwhelmed me.

Here’s One Secret To A Flat Belly – Running didn’t help!

I would come home after running 6 miles, eat and want to go to sleep – not doable with 2 toddlers running around!

After several years and many miles, I got close to my pre-pregnancy weight but I sure didn’t feel great. Crazy thing is, this continued for 6 years, at which point I became pregnant with my 3rd child and 19 months later my 4th child was born.  To help lose the baby weight, you can guess – I went back to running!

Old habits die hard.  Running seemed like a necessary means to an end -that end being skinny and being able to eat what I want.   I knew there was a secret to a flat belly. Other moms were doing it, so what was I missing?

What needed to change?

One late September night, change was coming and it was just a click away.  I sat at my computer and typed in my search “flat belly for moms”.

Of all the results that popped up, I clicked on the one and it took me to Fit Yummy Mummy.

Skeptical at first, oh yes.   Is it for real?  Just 15 minutes?  It went against what I knew about exercise or had chosen to know about exercise. I was at a point where it couldn’t get any worse so why not try it!

Plunging right into the FYM e-book, I followed the 15 minute workouts, made sure to eat 5 supportive meals a day and my results didn’t take long.

Within a couple short weeks, my clothes fit differently. I wasn’t tired.  I wasn’t grouchy.  I was changing! This was turning into much more than I expected.

I started FYM in September of 2010 and haven’t looked back.

I had already lost 8 lbs when I decided to join my first challenge – the 2011 NYTC.

I continue to grow and mature in my understanding of FYM. It works with life.   Life is not static and FYM is not static.   Growth and learning will always be available because of the unique environment of FYM.

One obvious bonus is Holly’s untiring determination to offer workouts and nutrition support that leads to success for women of all ages and backgrounds.

You can go and buy a workout DVD from the store or from an infomercial (been there done that!), but once you master that, what do you do and how do you stay challenged?

You don’t and then you stop and you go back to where you were.  You can always be challenged by FYM and have the tools to make the choice to move forward in the journey to be fit and yummy.

The Chin Up Craze

My passion for chin ups began during the 2011 NYTC.  I remember reading in Holly’s journal that she had a friendly competition with her husband to see who could do the most chin ups in 5 minutes.  In addition, Amy P. made the comment in her journal that she was getting a chin up bar and was working on them.  The competitor in me rose up and said …

…“I can do that” and “I am going to do that.”

Switching my focus to reaching a chin up goal from a certain belly measurement goal was a mental change I needed.

At this point, I was already able to do over 10 full body pushups and could do all the other push up variations that were in Holly’s workouts.  I think I even remember asking her if I could use pushups for IT.

With this confidence, I boldly approached the bar and well, just hung there.   The saying of “pride cometh before a fall” was true for me that day.  I couldn’t even do one. My son (age 11) and daughter (age 12), with no practice, could do 4.

Research is what I needed and I found the information I needed in Holly’s post on Improve your Chin Ups. The plan would be to rotate between negative chin ups and inverted rows making sure to do this 3 times per week – incorporating chin ups into my Fit Yummy Mummy strength workouts.

Consistency equals success

Not missing one workout, I was able to see the fruits of that consistency by doing 4 chin ups.   I think I literally did a little dance.  Why not keep going?

My Strength Increased and My Belly Decreased

kristin 1 1024x785 Secret to a Flat Belly for MomsMommy Belly:  32.5 – 30 (lost 2.5 inches)

It wasn’t until the beginning of the Summer Transformation Challenge, when a fellow FYM noticed my belly had gone down…she stated in my progress journal at ClubFYM:

“One of the things I have noticed (beside your fantastic strength – and amazing back definition) is that your belly has totally disappeared. I am starting to think that maybe this chin up thing is really working for you. You abs are so much more toned!” ~ Yogamama

that I made the realization that  chin ups were doing more than just increasing my upper body strength.

I was so focused on reaching my chin up goals that I didn’t give what was happening to my body a second thought.

This is where I put in a plug for the importance of taking before and after pictures and having accountability buddies that are willing to point out not only what needs improvement but what has improved.  At this point I am able to do 11.  My goal? Well, honestly I think that the sky’s the limit.  How about 20 non-stop?

Consistency & Intensity are Key to Increasing Strength => Increasing Fat Loss

My results at this point in my transformation are not in measurements, but in regards to strength.

I set out to achieve a strength goal and in just 3 months I progressed from 3 to 10 chin ups and flattened my mommy belly in the process. I must say that I am totally stoked about this.

Focusing on  goals like this has made me strong and to quote James Brown ”Whoaaa….I feel good, I knew that I would now, I feel good, yeah, I knew that I would now, so good, so good…” I feel the hottest I have ever felt.

My FYM journey to this point has been a very rewarding experience on more levels then just physical.  As I look back at my goals, I wonder what I was thinking.  They just seem so basic and limited.

I now understand what FYM can offer someone.  My results go way beyond what I expected.
