Back To School Season is HERE!

back to school
Are You Ready?
To be super honest….we sure are not! This morning was Tyler’s 1st day back to school – this time as a second grader! I thought I had the morning all mapped out so we could have a smooth transition – what time to wake Tyler up, what to wear, what to eat, where did I put his shoes again???? This kid wore sandals all summer! Well after celebrating our 4 year wedding anniversary last night, driving back to the park where the ceremony took place, we did not get home until 9:45. Much to Tyler’s dismay – it was Bed Time! Even though I laid everything out the night before – for some reason I RAN out of TIME! Why was I running to pull his shorts out of the dryer….why didn’t I make his lunch the night before? Now I wonder if the purpose of the 1st day is Thursday so Moms like me get a 2 day preview so they can ease back into the back to school routine with a bit less stress! If so, I’ll take it! After breakfast we were suddenly rushing….rushing to get dressed, filling his backpack, going over his car rider number, wiping the crumbs off his face, fixing his hair and taking his photo…..we were in the truck and on our way to school. I was suddenly hit with the reality this moment. I was so nervous for Tyler for this was his 1st year in a brand new school (since we moved to Louisville in January and his resides school was full – had to commute to a completely different school and get on a waiting list for this one!). I kept thinking of all the What If’s….how to make friends, how to ask for help, etc. etc. But at the same time reminding him of how much FUN he would have – that this is a New Adventure! As we pulled up to the school and into the car rider line, I see all these parents walking their children INTO school. My heart was aching for I was Torn – I so want to hold his hand and show him what to do and where to go – but at the same time I want him to feel trusting and confident that he can do this on his own! Before I knew it, a teacher opened the truck door and whisked Tyler away. Good thing I asked for a kiss while we were waiting. As I pulled away the tears began to flow! My child is growing up right before my eyes ~ the summer days of hanging out, playing ball, hiking in the park, going for an afternoon picnic, watching sponge bob have come to an end….but at the same time this is a New Beginning! One I appreciate and will cherish! For now I cannot WAIT to pick him up – see his cute smile and hear ALL about his 1st day! Oh yeah…and he is likely to be the only child at school with a Perform Better backpack ~ true sign that he’s the child of fitness professionals.
perform better backpack
Not to mention this backpack is of much higher quality than many of the stiff and cheaply made character backpacks out there – that end up falling part half way through the school year. Tyler did pick out a fun lunch box though – GI Joe! Tyler and I will be showing you what we pack for school lunch soon!

HA! I thought you were going to say you were PREGNANT or something!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Happy 1st Day of School, Tyler! You are too cute for your own good & getting SO BIG!!!!!!!!!

    Hugs!

    Ginger xo

  2. Antoinette Dickens says:

My dear friend…. i wish your heart all the best. We mothers has to take a lot, but we are strong… we will get through this.

    I’m thinking of you.

    All the best.

  3. Garilyn says:

I thought the same thing as Ginger!! I’d be emotional. Good thing I won’t have to go through that. I homeschool and we are starting on the 24th.

  4. Ahhh, Holly, big hugs :) My daughter is 26 and my son is 16 but there are always new “firsts” and times when you have to close your eyes, hold your breath, and let go. For us this year it’s Jet learning to drive and Nicole preparing to leave for where ever the military takes her hubby. It’s still just as hard as it was when they were little, but each time you let go and they fly successfully you realize that you have truly done your job as a parent. It’s a pretty wonderful feeling. Thanks for sharing with us. I’ll be looking forward to lunch packing tips from you and Tyler because we always have to pack lunches for homeschool fieldtrips!

    Have a wonderful day!

  5. Ginger says:

My question to moms on days like this is…what are you going to do with yourself today?

  6. LOl!!! Yes, I felt the same way! I have 3 girls ages 5, 9, and 14 and yesterday was my babies first day at kindergarten. So sad how the time goes by so quickly. As a personal trainer myself, my kids know exactly how Tyler feels…..love the back pack!!! Hope he has a wonderful first day.

  7. Brandi says:

It was our first back to school too! I also thought I had everything ready for the 4 kids, but we were rushing out the door at the last minute!
I, on the other hand, had to walk them in and take pictures of them with their teachers. Of course, I embarrassed all of them, but what are moms for? :)
    Looking forward to lunch ideas!!

  8. Melissa says:

LOL! I was thinking along the same lines as Ginger!

Holly, this is the FIRST year I have not had tears on the first day of school! And it’s kind of funny, but this was my daughter’s first year at our middle school. I think I’ve finally come to terms with the fact she’s just going to keep growing whether I like it or not! So proud of your little man – he’ll do GREAT at his new school! How could you NOT be that kid’s friend?!

  9. Lisa says:

I also brought my new second grader to her first day of school today, too. And her sisters, a fourth grader and an 8th grader. I am quite emotional about it, too. I will miss having them around me all day. It also makes me a little sad that time seems to pass so quickly. I don’t think I will like having an empty house one day. But I still have a little time. After I dropped them off, I did my intervals with my other two babies in the stroller. It helped perk me up a little bit.

  10. Mary Beth says:

Hi Holly! ((hugs)) I know that feeling! My girls started in a new school last year..going into 3rd and 6th grades..I was so nervous for them, but they came home and told me thay already had a bunch of new BFF’s!!
I am sure Tyler did great in school.
You are a super role model to him and you can tell he is a great child!
    Bravo!

  11. Lori says:

Thanks for sharing. I am sure he was not even aware of what you were going through. His little eyes were probablly just wide open looking at the school and all the new people. Please let us know how his day went.

I remember when my youngst sister had her first day in kindergarden. My father took the morning off work. He said he missed the other three I don’t want to miss that one. We took so many pictures of her she probablly thought she was making a moving instead of going to school. Too much fun.

  12. Lauren Dunbar says:

Holly omg I had to drop my eldest son yesterday for his 1st day of school as a 1st grader. It is so tough, my heart ACHED for most of the morning. We have 2 younger babies 3 years and 19 mos so I still have lots of company and things to do. Tyler is adorable and I wish him a great school year (and you too)!!!!

  13. Kim Dorst says:

Have a great first day Tyler!

  14. Paula says:

Most of us seemed to have the thought that you were pregnant! :0) Too funny!

My 23 year old daughter just started cosmetology classes, and I had the same feelings rush over me that I did when she started Kindergarten. I think it is a mommy thing, and that we never get past wanting to be there and protect our kids.

I hope Tyler has a wonderful first day of school, and that you get some “you” time! Well deserved!! Paula

  15. Elisa says:

Haha Ginger…pregnant? It would take a little longer on an announcement like that I think (and we would notice in the videos ;) .

I know I am not ready as I have a glitch in the organization department, but my head is in the right place for my oldest starting grade one. I think when my youngest starts school, it will be more emotional.

    WTG Tyler!

Bring home some homework and your mom will be right back into the swing of things hehe. I look forward to seeing what’s in your lunch bag :) .

  16. Connie says:

Oh, Holly, I had tears in my eyes just reading your story. This day always sneaks up on us and we are all always rushing out that door. I vow to change it every year but it happens time and time again.

Our children start school 2 weeks today and I’m ready but I’m not. I’ll try to prepare myself better this year. Luckily my youngest doesn’t start preschool for a whole month from now. I will have at least a couple of weeks under my belt when my oldest hits school.

I thought our kids were the only ones that started on a Thursday. I was kind of wondering why bother. There might be some families who want to finish up the week and weekend with their holidays and are forced to come back earlier. But I like what your thoughts are on the possible reason.

Hope you have a good day, Holly. I’m sure you are so busy that time will go by very quickly.

  17. Nisha says:

Holly I bawled when river went to nursery for his 1st day at 8months – sure I will again when it comes to preschool, primary school, secondary school & Uni then moving out of home….but think I’m getting a bit premature – he’s still only 8 months!

  18. DebY says:

Oldest son moved to an apartment last weekend–transitions–so exciting yet so hard!

  19. Robin says:

My daughter starts kindergarten and my son starts Pre-K on the 24th. I thought I was ready too, but am now experiencing some anxiety over it. I can’t believe they are big kids now. Where did my babies go? I’ll be looking forward to the lunch ideas too, especially since this will be the first time I’ve ever packed a school lunch. Want to make sure I keep feeding them healthy.

  20. Samantha says:

Wow… I still have a few weeks with Emmanuel before Kindy starts back again. Mid-September for us her in Greece. They go to Kindergarden for 2 years before entering 1st grade at school.
So looking forward to the tips… I’m sure the day for me will be an emotional one too!!

Hope Tyler had a great first day at the new school!
    He’s growing up so fast!

  21. Laurel says:

I kept my five sons at home until it was less emotional to send them to school. The first one started school at 7 1/2; the second at 13; the third at 9; the fourth at 12 and the fifth at 12. Each child is ready at a different time and having the government tell you when your kid is ready just doesn’t make sense.
    Just my opinion.

  22. Shawndala says:

I hope you had a GREAT first day Tyler!

  23. Rosalie says:

    Dear Holly,
What a darling little boy you have! Hope school keeps the creative juices flowing. My granddaughter starts first grade September 1~Rosalie

  24. Jaime Hoolsema says:

Oh dear, I thought you were preggers, too!! haha

My oldest starts Kindergarten next month, and my second starts preschool… I don’t know what I will do!! At least for both of them it’s only about 2 1/2 hours. About enough time to get grocery shopping, etc. done with my youngest two! I think I will be quite emotional, too.

    Good luck to you both!!

    Jaime

  25. Heather says:

Hey Holly I can truly understand your feelings!!! I too have kids starting school this yr. I have one starting Kindergarten 1 in 1st & 1 will be a Senior in High School too .. Funny I had one get his drivers license this yr & one starting Kindergarten.. wide range I know.. Plus I also have a grandbaby comming in November too..I will only have one at home with me this year so I am sending my Resume out left and right but no one seems to want a SAHM of 5 yrs ..:o(.Hang in there Holly things will get easier as Tyler gets older.. But he will always be your little baby ya know :o )

  26. Aunt Tracey says:

    Dear Tyler,
I am sure your first day was exciting and I am also sure you made at least one new friend. :)
Please tell mommy and Patrick hello from us. Give mommy a BIG hug, I am sure she needs one today…….I Love You and Jordan says HI!

  27. Anisha says:

I cannot wait for your busy mom tips. This is most definitely going to be a busy one for our family
I have a son entering 4th grade and another entering kindergarten. As much as I’ve looked forward to the day both my kids will be in school, I’m sad they’re growing so fast. Right before my eyes!

  28. Jennifer says:

It is funny that I was just thinking this same thing. My kids start next week and everyone seems to think that we, as parents, should be so happy to have our days back, but I am very sad. Our 4th (and final) child starts kindergarden this year. For the last 13 years their has always been a kid or two at home that I can take places and do things with, but now their are none! It’s not as if I won’t have anything to do, but I really like having a child around all the time to make plans with. Ok, that’s about all I can say for now because it’s still hard. We have to let them grow up and move on while hoping we have done our best. Holly, I am so glad to hear you managed through Tyler’s first day back. As always you are inspiring.

  29. Gay West says:

I have just read Holly’s story and all the replies. I have such a warm feeling right remembering all those “first” days for my two sons. They are 27 and 25 now. The first days were all so special, but yes, alas they do grow up! The hardest one of them all was when my oldest son went to college. He had been diagnosed with Type I diabetes at 16 and we were still reeling from all the upper respiratory infections he was getting because of it. We literally poured him into the car after packing all his stuff while he laid in bed. We drove him 4 1/2 hours away, unloaded everything and left him standing outside his dorm with a 102 degree fever! No, I wasn’t a bad mom! He had to be there. Yes, he recovered and so did I. As hard as they are, we will survive! Enjoy each and every “first” and God bless you all! Gay

  30. Karen (New Zealand) says:

    Hi Holly

Well I am glad that Mum’s on both sides of the world rush every morning no matter how prepared we think we are. Hence one of the reasons I changed my exercise to just before tea instead of first thing in the morning. One less thing to stress about on those busy mornings when you feel like the only thing you have been saying is “hurry up” “turn the tv off” as you are rushing out the door.
I have to ask – what is a car line number and why does your child need one? Something we don’t have over here.
Cheers from a busy working Mum.
    Karen

  31. Ruth says:

    Hi Holly,

I can so relate to you, wanting to encourage him to be independent while still being there for him when he needs it… At Kindergarten (in Germany it’s not part of school, it’s a completely different building) we are expected to take them to the classroom door and pick them up there. Something to do with making sure the parents are caring for the children.
I have to do another 1st day on Monday. My 4 yo is starting Kindergarten! I can’t tell you how nervous I am, and how I’m wondering whether I’ll still be able to sleep in until 6 am.. will I have to be even more strict with myself and roll out of bed at 5.45 to get my workout in?

I’m looking forward to your tips.

  32. 'elly says:

Oh, I am fighting back the tears just reading all of this. My oldest starts Kindergarten in 1 week. Sometimes my heart just aches wondering if I have spent enough quality time with him. I’m so looking forward to hearing your tips to make the transition easier and for lunches & snacks. P.S. Tyler, my kids just love you! Thanks for being a great role model. ;) .
