A Week’s Worth of Fitness

Here’s another peek into our family’s weekly routine!

Staying active and fit is a priority for everyone in my family.

No matter what the season, Tyler is involved in at least 1 sport and encouraged to take part in free play after homework.

Morning walks aside, my husband and also I make time to workout together at least twice a week when our schedules allow us to – that is : )

Dave Randolph’s kettlebell studio “Iron Body Fitness” is actually a place that we ALL frequent throughout the week.

I take my kettlebell class once a week as well as see Cheryl for my pre-natal massages (Absolute HEAVEN!). Patrick meets with Dave for corrective based workouts and Tyler sees Dave twice a week for Kung Fu Class.

Keeping Tyler active as well as SHOWING him that staying active is a priority in our lives too, has influenced Tyler in so many positive ways.

From the focus and dedication he puts into his classes and practices (as seen in the video) to the way he spends his free time.

This kid can be seen taking the time to improve whatever skill was taught that week with no prompting from us. While he loves to read and is “into” Harry Potter, he has such an active spirit it is hard for him to sit still for long. When he is up and moving, instead of wandering aimlessly – he has a focus and takes pride in the fun he has as he practices on his own.

This makes me so proud and thankful that not only have our habits rubbed off on him, but we have set him up to be successful by getting him involved with activities that compliment his needs and personality. Plus we have been blessed to have the opportunity to have such amazing coaches – such as Dave Randolph!

And I have to brag on HIM for a moment since he has played such a big role in all our lives. I am so excited to share that Dave is officially a published author! Check out his new book “The Spartan Warrior Workout”!

Tyler looks like he’s having a fantastic time Holly!! The concentration on his face is such a treat to see. My youngest have been practicing Karate for 3 years now and there comes a time when all of a sudden the basics they’ve been learning seem to “click” and their forms begin to become a thing of magic. I find it so fascinating to watch them move now, both in class and out.
If there’s one thing Tyler will remember all of his life and carry on into his own family when the time comes it will be the time spent with you and the rest of the family doing things – physical activities – together. I have 2 sets of kids from 2 marriages 10 years apart. The older kids tell me the things they remember most are swimming together, canoeing together, hiking together, karate classes together (we did them as a family with the older ones), camping, spelunking, rappelling – all of the stuff we did that were fun and yet physically demanding – that’s what they remember most as being fun. A love of physical activity is a wonderful gift to give your children to be passed on to their children later in life :)
My younger kids love to see my husband and I in the gym we made downstairs working out every 2nd evening. Often they’ll come in and do some push ups and sit ups and kick and punch the big bag while the two of us work out. I think it’s really important that they see us sharing this time together and enjoying it.
Keep up the wonderful posts Holly, I love reading them!

Gosh he has improved so much in just short amount of time! This is awesome! My step daughter is 8 and unfortunately not too active-asside from a little cheerleading every now and then. She loves to match me, so I took her to Hibbetts and Target. We now have matching running skorts and tops and sports watches. This did the trick. She is learning what intervals are ;) Tell Tyler thanks for allowing us to see his rockin’ skills!

I try to go for a walk at least one a week with the baby in the pram but my 3 year old daughter walking alongside.

She also loves to dance and often asks that I put on music for her.

The other day she hadn’t been very active so before I put on the dvd she requested I said we had to spend 15 minutes working out so in between her running to and from her bedroom I showed her some moves – pushups (which she does better than I do), squats, lunges, etc.

Neat! Thanks so much for sharing. I like to get my children involved in workouts, also. They enjoy going to the basement and lifting some db’s (small ones) and they like training for chin-ups. We go for walks often and sometimes do sprints together. It is great fun, and I love sharing this time with my family.

This is a great video of Tyler. My husband and I do a lot of outdoor activities with our 2 kids 5 and 3 1/2. We have started taking them to play tennis once a week. They love joining me to do the resistance training. My youngest loves the mountain climbers and push ups
