Eat Healthy On The Go
As shared in yesterday’s post “The #1 Travel Fit Kit Tool” is your Cooler. Now, what do you pack to keep in your cooler to help you stay on track while on vacation?
Dozens of comments were shared with lots of healthy snack ideas. Thanks so much for sharing! Be sure your healthy travel snacks are based around quality Protein and Produce.
Take a look inside my vacation cooler. I have packed enough to keep us on track for we will be gone for a week. I planned ahead as to what works best in the car, in the hotel and while out and about at our destination spots.
Our Healthy Travel Snacks
Water and Smoothie Mix
Staying hydrated while you travel is a must. Along with a few bottles of water, I like to pack a smoothie mix with a shaker cup to help kick start my mornings. While Prograde Chocolate Lean Meal Replacement is a great choice, I have packed a few scoops of my Veganique to stay close to my Morning Green Smoothie routine.
Apples & Peanut Butter
Apples are super portable – pair them up with a healthy protein like PB! I found these grab and go containers at Whole Foods. Tyler LOVES PB for Me.
Jerky & Fruit Leathers
Dried protein/produce are super convenient travel snacks. They do not require a cooler which makes it easy to take along when you are out and about enjoying your vacation events. Clif Kid makes a Twisted Fruit dried fruit stick that is fun for kids and easy for you to eat too.
Nuts and Dried Fruit
Another portable protein/produce combo. I picked out a couple different nuts – pistachios and cashews. Make sure you MEASURE out the right portion sizes before you pack these items. Yes, they are good for you, however higher in calories. Use 1/4 cup to portion out each snack into a snack sized baggie to make it easy to grab and go.
Blueberries, Nectarines and Baby Bell Cheese ~ Baby Carrots and Hummus
Gotta love this mix of fresh fruits and proteins. Blueberries are great when you have the munchies for you can snack on them one by one. Love the convenience of the individual hummus packs to dip your favorite take along veggie – we enjoy baby carrots.
Yogurt and Granola
Yogurt is an easy grab and go protein and packs well, especially when you freeze it 1st. I prefer plain greek yogurt while Tyler enjoys the Stoneyfield Strawberry yogurt tubes. Pair this up with a natural granola for added fiber. I packed snack baggies of a hemp based granola I found at Whole Foods. Will also add one of my fruits to this snack to balance it out.
Larabars & Organic Milk
Bars are one of the most obvious choices for a healthy travel snack…however, many bars are loaded with TOO much sugar and some even have trans fats. Take a 2nd look at that ingredients list. This is why we choose Larabars…ALL Natural. Just nuts and dates and other natural dried fruits for fun flavors. The organic Milk’s are one of Tyler’s vacation treats and they are handy to take along for a fun drink.
With just a little planning, you can have healthy snacks in place while you are away and enjoy your vacation guilt free.
Be sure you have a sturdy Cooler – I found my cooler at TK Max. It is made by California Innovations.
Don’t forget…
Paper towel, wet wipes, plastic utensils, extra ziplock baggies and cooler packs.

Holly, this is the most comprehensive healthy snack list I’ve ever come across. Thank you so much.
Thank you for all the great tips, Holly. Looks like a great variety.
WOW! Even your sister did not know about the hummus snack size. YUMMY! Love the ideas. ASlthough I am sure you have shared these ideas with me before, I love to have the refresher. Love You, Holly. Hope you 3 and a 1/2 have a great summer trip.
I have to look up the Larabars. I need to find a “good” healthy bar. Hopefully, I can get them somewhere in my area. If not, I can always order online.
Have a safe trip and enjoy, Holly. Cedar Point has awesome roller coasters, but probably not for you.
It will be a wonderful time.
I think that is one well packed cool bag! It has given me some worthy ideas, thanks Holly enjoy your trip
We are traveling next week and I’ve been starting to think about food to take…I loved not only reading these ideas, but SEEING them, too! We have a Whole Foods nearby, so I’ll be making a trip there! THANKS! Have a great trip!
This info is great!! My question to you is where did you get such a great cooler. I love how you have 2 seperate compartments.
Thanks for the great suggestions Holly. It helps to have new inspiration for healthy, tasty snacks. We eat a lot of the same snacks over and over and it gets boring, this will help mix it up.
Thanks for the ideas i’m going to the store tonight so this will hlep.
A few of these are great “new” ideas. Thank you for sharing. Enjoy your time with your family!
I like what you listed. never thought of bringing smoothie mixes. Most of the others we do bring. I don’t really enjoy going to fast food places, but sometimes I get out voted.
Holly, thanks so much for the nutritious snacks. I never saw the LaraBar in the stores where I live. The closet health food store is a few miles away from me, maybe they might carry them. I hope so. I usually buy “Akins”, which 2 of them have no alcohol sugar. That’s the one I eat when I’m out & can’t make it to have lunch.
Have a nice trip to Chicago.
Awesome Holly. Great snack ideas. I can’t wait to go visit my Health Food store for these alternative snack bars, dried twisted fruit, pre packaged peanut butter & hummus as I’ve been placing it in small travel safe containers.
Enjoy Chicago, what a great place!
Love Dani xx
That is great Hollly, my husband and I are going to our daughter’s cabin in Lloyd minister next week and I love that you are taking such good snacks. I will definitely be taking a lot of them with us. Thank you so much for printing them out for all of us to see.
I hope you all have a great happy joyful trip in the big city of Chicago.

Thanks Holly! I have half of the cooler packed as we are on the road for an 8 hour road trip for a wedding tomorrow! We have vowed not to stop for meals as we know we will only make quick unhealthy choices. Thanks again for the wonderul ideas! I LOVE fruit leather – Target makes their own great organic brand and it is great!
As always you have great tips and advice have a great
and safe trip!!
Oh, Holly! I just got back from my road trip and would have loved to included some of your ideas for something new and different. I will be using these ideas for my next road trip.
One question, what size cooler bag is that and where did you get it? Do you have a hard cooler that you use as well? Just wondering.
Have a great trip!!!!!
Great ideas Holly! It really just comes down to being organised doesn’t it? Thanks very much!
Enjoy your holiday…
Holly,
This is a wonderful list if food items to pack for a trip. I’m glad you mentioned portioning out dried fruit and nuts. I have just mixed them all up in a bag in the past–pumpkin seeds, raisins, walnuts, sunflower seeds. dried cranberries. But I can see how easy it is to overeat fruit and nuts when they are in one bag–better to separate into 1/4 C portions. Also I have never seen the small hummus cups before. Did you find them at Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods?
Great ideas Holly….thanks a ton for all your tips. Have a great holiday
Some great ideas, but loads of that stuff can’t be bought in teh UK.
Thanks anyway.
Holly, you are awesome! What great ideas! I always have a hard time trying to figure out what to pack that is a supportive choice. Thank you so much for sharing
The hummus cups are the best! We find ours at our local Costco. Even my 14 month old loves the hummus. I forgot about Larabars! MMMM.
Thanks for the reminder on how to pack – my parents always want to take me and my boys to a fast food place. I always pack food.
I am now so hungry! Seriously great ideas. One other benefit of packing a cooler is the ability to plan ahead. It can help you advoid the fast food pitfalls when you are hungry by being prepared.
I love all these ideas! I have a hard time knowing what to buy at the store if I don’t know the brand and what the package looks like when I am trying to buys some of the foods suggested in FYM, so this was great to see the pictures of everything.
Great examine, I just passed this onto a colleague who was undertaking a small exploration on that. And he really bought me lunch simply because I found it for him smile So let me rephrase that: Many thanks for lunch!
I love this list! My sons loves this lunch! Thanks! We have one other thing we put in our lunch bag, Cheese Jerky, its from Snack Patrol and it is a great source of protien and dairy!
