Need some quick, easy and healthy after school snack ideas?
Tyler is excited to show you what is in his Snack Box!
The key to making your children’s after school routine successful and stress free is Planning Ahead.
Yes – there is the “P” word again, again and again – maybe if I tell you enough, it will make a difference for you.
You must know what to have on hand – which Tyler has mapped out for you – and make it easy to access.
We keep Tyler’s snack choices simple which lends to super EASY access and meal prep if necessary with flexibility built in so Tyler has a variety of options which keeps his snacks fun and healthy! Oh and PORTABLE – for there will be times when I pick him up from school and we are on our way to practice, game or other after school activity.
Together Tyler and I make sure his after school snacks have
1. Protein
2. Produce
~ Quality Protein – deli meats, eggs, nuts, nut butters, yogurt, milk (typically almond milk, goat milk or organic milk made by Horizon), beef jerky, etc.
~ Produce (think fruits and veggies)
A note on Allergies -
Yes, I am FULLY aware of the fact that there are such things as ALLERGIES. I am simply sharing what WE use and what works for us. If you or your child or even your child’s school is not able to eat NUT products for example….then DON’T. And by no means does the omission of this ingredient mean your choices are limited. There are PLENTY of protein and produce options that you can choose from. New food choices are there when you choose view this from the glass as half FULL rather than empty. Try it. It works.
A note on Carbohydrates
When giving your children carbohydrates – yes fruits and veggies but also breads, cereals, crackers, bars, etc. – be sure to choose carbohydrates high in Fiber and low in sugar. Whole grains in the form of high fiber, low sugar crackers, pretzels, bite sized cereals, etc. Kashi products are great – if you do not have access to Kashi – simply compare labels. My point is to help you avoid typical snack option that are loaded with added sugars, artificial ingredients, high fructose corn syrup and those with 1 gram or Less of fiber.
My rule of thumb: If any snack food is brightly colored and/or has a cartoon character on it – SKIP IT. This is the work of clever marketers attempting to play into the emotions of your children. Do not Fall for it! Do not willingly put this junk in the growing bodies of your children.
TIP: If it is NOT in the house -your children canNOT eat it!
Tyler’s Top 10 Favorite After Snacks
1. Frutabu and almonds
2. Hummus, baby carrots and Kashi crackers
3. Z Bar or Chocolate Peanut Butter Prograde Cravers and apple slices
4. Horizon Yogurt and banana
5. Horizon Milk and bite sized Kashi Cereal
6. PB, wheat pretzels, and apple slices
7. String cheese and bell pepper strips
8. Deli meat roll up and grapes
9. Beef jerky and sliced nectarines
10. Kashi Crackers and Laughing Cow cheese
ALL snack choices are natural, simple and easy!
When you approach creating healthy after school snacks for your children in this manner – it is easy. Just have a few grab and go food items on hand so you can mix and match. As you can see in the video – Tyler has easy access to his snacks.
Too often we make it hard on ourselves by trying to PLEASE our children. Well our children need us to set the example and take control by giving them Healthy Options – for many children do not know what is good for them.
YES….Tyler does eat the not-so-supportive cookies and fruit snacks but NOT every DAY. He actually knows and understands the concept of MODERATION – which he calls “Once in a while”.
Teach your children what this means.
Make the good stuff easily available.
Set the example by eating the good stuff too!

I picture him at the lunch table at school telling everyone about their food. He has it down pat
My son is 3.5 and loves watching Tyler’s videos. Now he is convinced that fruit is a great snack and he just said he will only drink water like Tyler. Thanks Tyler for sharing your favorites snacks!
Great Job TYLER! And Holly! What an inspiration you both are to me and my children. They love to watch the videos of Tyler with me. What yummy snacks and all the tips you give us!! Thanks so much you guys
Lots of hugs and smiles from us! Lauren
Love the ideas for snacks!
Great job Tyler (and mom)!
You are a great inspiration!
I love the helpful advice. I have realized lately how much sugar my kids are eating. Both are big water drinkers. Two questions: What is so terrible about milk? Where do I buy Frutabus and other snacks shown in the drawer? I have a Save A Lot, a Houchens, and Wal-Mart — I’ve never seen those. I’d make a special trip to Louisville (about 90 minutes away) just to get those!
Great job Tyler! My boys love watching these videos, too! Today we went to Whole Food and got some new snacks to try and stuff for their lunches! A couple questions, though — a)where do you find the PB4 Me? b)where do you find the pb & J flavored almonds? Those are two things I’ve never seen and would love to find. Thanks so much!

Great video with very helpful snack ideas for myself and my 29 month old daughter. It’s better to start as early as possible giving our kids the healthy foods, otherwise it becomes a battle the older they get. At first I felt that eating healthy really limited my choices, but I’m seeing it differently and trying to be more creative with those choices.
My boys are hooked! They can’t wait to see more. They kept asking and comparing what they could and could not eat and were coming up with their own solutions. This is gooood stuff!
WOW! Tyler, you are amazing! I’m sure you are just as great when you are not in front of the camera! I want you to come live with me for a while and teach my kids all the smart things you know about healthy eating! I’m going to the grocery tomorrow and I am adding some of your snack ideas to the list! I can’t wait!!! We are eliminating lots of unhealthy foods in our house. It’s going to take some getting used to ….especially for my kids, but we will all be better off in the long run! I CAN’T WAIT to see your next video!
Hope your are enjoying 2nd grade!
Tyler is ADORABLE!!!!! What a blessing to see how knowledgeable he is at such a young age about good nutrition. I had to smile at the end when he was drinking his water and saying it was the best drink in the world! It really should be an advertisement!!!
How great that he is an advocate for his peers; my eight yr old daughter loves to watch his videos too! She’s really trying to make healthier choices!
Hugs,
Alana
Tyler! You are so fun! Thank you for sharing your favorite snacks with us! Hope school is going well!
Too cute! He is so smart!!
Tyler is beyond precious! So natural and obviously feels great about himself. It’s obvious he’s had great parenting. You and his father should be proud.
Great tips, Holly! And Tyler is such a cutie and so smart about proper nutrition
Way to go, guys! Thanks for sharing and helping us all to be healthier!
Tyler and Holly,
Thanks so much for some additional ideas. Tyler, Owen LOVES watching you on your videos. He also loves that you guys have a lot of the same snacks. But now he has some new ideas. Where do you get the peanut butter and jelly flavored almonds, oatmeal animal crackers and the oatmeal crackers? Owen says good job on the videos, dude! He watches them over and over again.
Fabulous video series! Tyler, you are so informative and my 2 year old daughter adores you! Every time she sees the computer she points to it and says, “Tyler- Tyler!” We love reviewing all of your favorite snack choices with our almost 4 year old, too. Keep them coming! Holly, you always do such a remarkable job!
Thanks Tyler (and Mom) that was great!
I love the fruitabu and have replaced the fruit snacks i normally get with these as well as the natural fruit ropes. I also am going to be switching him to the organic yogurt immediately. After reading the label I realized the ones I have been buying have sugar and corn syrup. Yuck!
Thanks Tyler for your amazing Snack Ideas!! It gives me Great Snack Ideas for my Daughter Sasha. You are the Best!! Keep it coming!!!
Where do you buy the Frutabu and Z Bars? I’ve never heard of these? Can you get them at Wal-Mart or Krogers? Those are the only grocery stores I have in my town. Thanks!
Great video!! Loved all the ideas, and will implement them with my 2 children. They are learning to love ice cold water as their drink of choice; however, I do caution them against the bottled water in plastic containers and we don’t buy them; we have instead purchased stainless steel refillable containers for each of us and fill them with twice-filtered water, and we all love it!! Thanks again for all the great ideas — keep ‘em coming!
Where do you get Cravers (from fridge section of video) and what are they? Thanks. Way to go Tyler – really enjoyed your enthusiasm!
Trader joes is our suggestion (also can find at Fresh & Easy) Flattened fruit – the healthy version of fruit roll ups!
Great job Tyler!
