7 Year Old Can Read A Food Label, Can You?

Can you read a food label on the items you buy?

Do you know what to look at, what to look for and how it affects your fitness goals?

Tyler and I made another trip to the grocery – this time we brought the flip cam!

The Fit Yummy Mummy’s who are taking part in the Summer Slim Down Challenge at ClubFYM have been getting a huge dose of reality when it comes to taking a closer look at what is really in the foods we are buying….especially the ones labeled as “Healthy”!

In fact, Tyler, who is just 7 years old, not only knows what to look for on the nutrition facts label, but also the marketing strategies these companies employ to lead moms to buy these foods!

This is just a short clip of a series of videos I am putting together for the Fit Yummy Mummy’s at ClubFYM to help them be informed, aware and armed to make the best decisions when it comes to the foods they eat for fat loss as well as overall health.

Enjoy and if you would like more step by step guidance, be sure to join us at ClubFYM.com!

    Good morning Tyler,

Thank you SO much for these tips! I can’t wait to show my 4 year old daughter and my 6 year old son your video.

You are teaching them some very healthy habits by reading the label to watch out for the ‘bad stuff’ in foods and to be careful that the colourful/fancy packaging on the outside does not always mean the food on the inside is good for you.

Thank you again and we look forward to your next video lesson! :-)

    Hey there, Tyler!

Your common sense approach to shopping sets a stellar example for kids and adults alike. I especially loved the observation about how they market products. (i.e. Frosted Flakes being promoted as improving sports performance when it really doesn’t, including toys in cereal boxes, etc.)

Still waiting for you to publish a grocery store guide “Tyler’s Tips for Healthy Shopping”! ;)

    Keep up the great work!

Another good video Tyler! My daughter Olivia watched it and you taught her some great things about what’s healthy and what isn’t! Thanks a lot! She’ll watch it over and over again!

Tyler, I’d just like to let you know that I am so glad you’ve decided to do these videos. It shows us how we can teach our children and they will learn and be smart, like you are. You are making very good choices and setting a great example!

Tyler, thank you so much for this! It’s so important for kids (and their parents!) to know that they can make good choices once they learn what to look for – you are such a good role model for other kids! They will see what you can do, and feel like they can learn this and take good care of themselves, too!

Normally, I wouldn’t like that a kid is that aware of bad food, but he seems to be feeling really smart, as opposed to saddened that he can’t have any.
Also. I’m not a mommy – still I love this site!!

Tyler – You are such a smart guy! I’m very proud of you for being so aware of what’s good for you and what’s not. My son (Kyle) is 4 and he loved watching your video.

Holly – another great tip for us mommy’s struggling with giving our kids what’s best for them amongst all of the ads, pricing and promos to get us to buy crap.

    Thanks to both of you!

Wow! I never noticed how all the “junk” cereals are at eye level for kids -talk about marketing!

I’m curious -at what age did you start teaching Tyler to read the labels Holly?

    Way to go Tyler!

Thank you, Tyler! Your insights about Tony The Tiger were very enlightening! I loved hearing your perspective on what they are trying to tell kids using Tony The Tiger. That is amazing!

Good job Tyler – I make my kids read the labels too! It is amazing the heavy marketing that we do to buy unhealthy food and products. It be nice if all the companies got it together and just stopped producing that stuff. Until then, we’ve got you to help spread the word…Way to Go Tyler!
