“I’m raising fit kids and my children understand that Fitness Is for Life.”

Think about this….
You are your children’s most influential role model.

The impact of what you DO far outweighs what you say.

I applaud ALL moms who are taking action and making a difference, not only for the sake of having a better body but to provide the example of what it means to live a fit, healthy and active lifestyle for their children!

Fit Yummy Mummy Susan – Mom of Three, Knoxville, Tennessee- is an outstanding example of just how powerful a mother’s choices and lifestyle can be to her children.

“Exciting news!

Last fall my daughters wanted to go for the President’s National Physical Fitness Award at their school.

They came home one afternoon, quite excited about the prospect of working to earn this demanding award. We got on-line and spent some time seeing what it takes to earn these honors.

Then, we discussed the level of difficulty, the time, effort and commitment necessary to work for it. The girls (now 9 and 11) agreed it would be a huge challenge, but were willing to work for it. Their brother even thought it would be fun to join in the efforts.

They began doing some training at home to improve their fitness levels–becoming more diet-conscious (increasing the intake of good fuels for their bodies), and exercising more.

We talked about good choices and the importance of a well rounded fitness program, but I let them make the ultimate decisions about how to achieve their goals. They also worked out with me (doing safe and kid-friendly exercises) on many occasions. They enjoyed the standard they set for themselves, and WE had fun with it.

Time went by, and the talk about the program faded.

All of them were (and are) still working to be fit, but other things (homework, music, homework, homework…) got a lot of their attention. We discussed the fitness program from time to time, but I did not push the issue. I have always believed that parents should not force any extra-curricular activities on children. I encourage their interests–those things that are sparked by them.

Last week was the last day of the 2008-2009 school year here, and I have exciting news to share.

Madison achieved her goal of becoming a National Physical Fitness Award winner!!!

I had no idea she had reached the mark on the various events. She’d come home from time to time and talk about the mile run, the v-stretch, the 50 meter run, etc… but that was the extent of it. That is part of their PE program at school, so I didn’t think much about it with regards to the NPFA.

I am very proud of all of my children for their hard work this school year. They are all winners in my book. They have had great grades, been good citizens, and treated others with respect and kindness all year long. Their efforts have paid off in such a big way.

While awards are fun to achieve, and a great accomplishment, my children understand that Fitness Is for Life.

I love them and couldn’t think of a group I’d rather share this success with than my Fit Yummy Mummy family.”

As summer rolls in, many moms with school aged children are super concerned about sticking to their fitness plan.

I have one question – Why?

One of the BEST pieces of advice I read in one of the mainstream fitness magazines was a Fit Mom who stated…..

She follows an At-Home workout plan – NOT just because she’s pressed for time and it’s convenient………

but also because it means her child can see her exercise – it will seem like the norm – which will help her child grow up to be as active as she is.

What is the norm in your home? Are you raising fit kids?

What will you inspire YOUR children to do this summer?
This is your opportunity to make some changes – take action, take the lead and they WILL follow in your footsteps…they already are!

When my four year old knows what mountain climbers and spiderman crawls are and my two year old is attempting a T-Up….I think I’ve made an impact on them!

My children love to either watch me work out or they join in and mimic what I am doing along side me! What a great feeling!

this is so true! I care for two of my nieces during the week and yesterday they were pretending I be mommy and baby, my niece Mia then turned to me and said “auntie! Look at me! I’m the mommy so I’m exercising!” she is 4, it was awesome to know that staying healthy is part of a mothers job.

Congratulations to your daughter Susan! That is definitely a motivator and reminder for the rest of her life that she is living a healthy life style and capable of it. My oldest son joined soccer this year and is loving it. My youngest is more into tasks of strength, but is always using his muscles and showing me how strong he is. It is very encouraging to know that my healthy lifestyle inspires them as well.

I am a mother of three, 23, 19 and 3. The two oldest are now training (weightlifting, etc) in some form 4 or 5 days a week. I have always been fit and healthy. The three year goes to the gym with me and he does puchups, pullups and “abs” everyday. He wants to be strong like MOMMY!! Now that is a great feeling!
