No Time? Too Busy?

This is the #1 Obstacle to Getting Results

What about all those Time Management strategies?

You’ve tried carefully organizing your fitness goals, scheduling your workouts and listing out the priorities of your day all with the goal of getting more done in a shorter amount of time.

So why does your workout keep getting put off?

The secret lies in managing your ENERGY rather than simply your time.

Time is a finite resource yet we try to manage it every day. We only end up frustrated because we cannot get more done in less time.

Energy on the other hand is something you can manage. It can be extended and renewed on a daily basis.

You know when you are feeling enthusiastic, you are more motivated to not only get more done, but to focus on the tasks that produce more energy – like fitting in your workout.

When you are feeling blah or just tired, you come up with a handful of excuses not to workout or you attempt to get it in but don’t put your best efforts into it.

We all have different levels of energy at different times of the day. Most Busy Moms would say they definitely are or are not a morning person–there’s not usually much gray area in the morning department. As for night owls, the more energy they have after the sun goes down to get things done, the better.

So when it comes to managing your energy, start by paying attention to your energy patterns throughout the day.

Match your Energy to the Task

From here, schedule high energy tasks to the part of the day that you work best.

~ Use high energy peaks for your most challenging tasks

your workouts, meal planning/preparation, playing with your children, etc.

~ Use low energy valleys for routine tasks

writing in your journal, doing laundry, taking inventory of the food in your pantry, etc.

Throughout the day, ask yourself:

“What’s the best use of my time and energy right now?”

Bottom line, when you find yourself saying….I just don’t have the time to workout – know that time isn’t really the problem.

No one else has any more than you.

Making use of your peak energy times will make the challenging task of “finding the time to workout” not only easier to accomplish, but the successful completion of each one will only lead to an upward spiral of more, good feeling energy.

Combine these Energy Management Skills with the full body, fat burning, short burst workouts in your Fit Yummy Mummy Workout Plan ~ It only takes 15 minutes a Workout! How’s that for making time for workouts?

Bonus Busy Mom Workout Tip

Maybe you have the Time and the Energy but your Children are wanting your attention? I have even had moms tell me their children will NOT LET them workout. This is in no way grounds for making another excuse.

In fact this is the Perfect opportunity to set boundaries, set a good example and INVITE your children to play and workout WITH you!

This is exactly what Jayson Hunter’s wife Liane and his daughter Hailey do!

Jayson, Registered Dietitian, co-founder of Prograde Nutrition and author of Dress Size Reduction Diet, says,

Hailey attempts to workout with Liane every time and she can actually do lunges, planks, modified pushups, etc.

Holly – Thanks for the pointers on managing your energy.

After the new year celebrations my mom, who is 84 (I’m 55), told me that she wanted to take a walk after lunch every day. Well, on this particular day I was exhausted and went to my room and laid down after lunch. She couldn’t find me and went on her own, which of course it thrilled me that she was committed, but I was so disappointed that I missed the walk. I don’t plan to miss another! A nap can wait.

Hailey you are so cute! And it’s fantastic you’re learning Holly’s routines with your mom at such a young age. They will always be fun for you. Thanks for the video!

    Hi Holly,

Thank you for this tip! I always feel like there is never enough time in a day, since I work full time, commute over an hour each way and have a 4 month old. It seems like I barely have time for me, so I’ve been struggling to get a workout in lately. You are right, I need to stop making excuses and just take the 15-30 minutes out of my day and work out. Thank you again!

Thank you so much for this tip. I’ve been trying to get up earlier in the morning but after I have waited 20 mins after my morning drink to get started I’ve been led to do something else and before I know it my time is gone. But I will work through this better and try to get some things done the night before.

Hailey, you are so adorable and doing such a great job working out with your Mommy. Thank you for the inspiration.

Energy management rather than time management – great lateral thinking! Most mums are good at time management because they have to be, but energy management gets left out of the equation because we do so many tasks according to the demands of the moment. I colour code my workouts according to whether they were high-energy or low-energy, and across the week I can see my energy pattern. Of course, it is closely related to my sleep patterns.

Hailey just got done watching herself here on your blog and she immediately said she wanted to go workout and she went to the living room to do the exercises.

I think you have a future Fit Yummy Mummy. Many years in the future. ;)
