You’ve made the commitment to a fat burning fitness program, are eating healthy and have made quite a bit of progress…but there’s STILL a that

Last Bit of Belly Fat!

What can you do?

This was a question that was recently sent in and I am sharing it with you today in the hope that the advice shared will be just as helpful to you.

Q: “Holly,

I been actually following your program for awhile now. I been incorporating 15-min intense workouts and moving around more by walking and dancing. I was wondering how can I tone my stomach, particularly the lower abdomen. I understand spot-burning is impossible but I don’t need to lose weight as I am already underweight. Would mountain climbers tone that area? Thanks for your help!

A: The best way to see a difference in flattening and toning your tummy is to clean up what you are eating.

Nutrition accounts for 75-80% of how your body looks – and even more so for your belly area. So even though you have added the most effective fat burning exercises- the more dramatic, toning effects you are wanting to see for your lower abs come from what and how you eat.

~~~
Q: “Holly,
The thing is I been mostly eating right for the most part. I been mostly eating whole and natural foods such as produce, nuts, Greek yogurt. I try to avoid gluten and lactose but I do drink cow’s milk with my Kashi cereal once a day.”
3 Belly Flattening Nutrition Tips
1. Write It Down
If you think you are eating healthy and clean…then prove it to yourself that you truly are by keeping a detailed food log for at least 7 days.
Not only will writing down what you eat help you see the reality of portion sizes and/or calories consumed, but just how consistent you are with choosing quality, fat burning foods.
2. Eliminate Dairy & Wheat
Based on what you just shared, I would ask you to consider eliminating dairy and wheat. The only way to determine if these foods are standing in your way is to stop eating them for a good 14-21 days, then reintroduce them back in and note your body’s reaction.
Milk – If you are drinking cow’s milk every day may be a culprit that is preventing the loss of further belly fat loss. Pasteurized milk may have chemicals that make you overly sensitive, homogenization allows for incomplete protein digestion which can disrupt the immune system and lead to allergies and the most alarming reason- cows today are overloaded with antibiotics and hormones to increase milk production. Not exactly the type of food you want in your body – especially when you are trying to create a healthy environment for a super charged metabolism.
If you must use “milk”, choose almond, coconut, goats milk or seek out an organic milk, free of hormones and antibiotics, it still goes through the same process as regular milk and can have a similar effect on your body.
Wheat – While Kashi cereals are one of the better cereal choices – they are a wheat product which contains gluten. It is the gluten – a sticky substance with a consistency like glue that is difficult to digest and can have a disruptive effect on the digestive system, producing toxins, gas and bloating. Gluten is found in wheat (as well as rye, oats and barley) – and makes up the majority of the Breads, Cereals, Crackers, etc. many of us eat a LOT of that becomes a barrier to further belly fat loss.
Take a second look at the ingredients list of the wheat based foods you are eating….yes, even the foods labeled as “Healthy”. Substitute with gluten free grains such as brown rice, quinoa, millet, buckwheat and /or spelt.
3. How Many Servings of Produce Are You Eating?
You mentioned produce, are you eating 10 serving a day? Making this switch will allow you to see even greater flat tummy results. Need a guide to help you get started? Look here >>10 Calorie Control Strategies
Bottom Line for Blasting Bell Fat:
If you desire to see more results, it is not a matter of asking…
“What other ab exercises can I do?”
It is a matter of getting Honest about What and How you eat. You really do need to be aware of the “healthy” foods you are eating, make adjustments to eat more supportively and do so for a good 4 weeks straight.
It is very easy to “Think” we eat healthy and do so for the “most part”, however…
* Too many calories – even of the good stuff – can prevent further results.
* Foods we think are healthy but are not the best choice can prevent further results.
* A Lack of Consistency will completely Stall Flat Tummy Results.
Having 5 really good days and 3 not so good days will only cause you to get stuck.
You must, Eat Clean and Eat Clean More Often in order to Blast the Last bit of Belly Fat.
Yes, this takes effort. Achieving a lean, toned, tight tummy requires nothing less.
Holly,
Wow, that really helped me out. I need to evaluate my eating habits. Thanks!
    Holly, well said and so true. I lost nearly 2.5lbs in my 1st week of the STC just by eating clean and still looking for ways to incorporate more supportive foods in my meal plans. I was working out but the nutrition helped so much. Tracking my food the entire week showed me exactly what and how much I was eating. I use myfitnesspal.com to track my food. Very user friendly stie.
    Holly, thanks for this detailed and helpful post. I have a few questions:
    1. How do you get enough calcium?
    2. Have you experimented with cutting out just dairy and then just wheat to see the difference?
    3. Some say that soy milk is just another artificial creation. Do you drink soy milk or only the “milks” you list?
    4. Do you eat eggs or butter?
    Thanks for answering!
    Aileen,
    It sounds like you could benefit from following a full fitness plan. This is what I offer through Fit Yummy Mummy.com
    Mary
    Calcium comes from many other sources – such as green veggies – which your body can actually absorb much easier. I also eat greek yogurt, keifer and once in a while, cottage cheese.
    Yes – I went through an elimination diet about 2 years ago that lead me to avoid cows milk. Which is why I now share this advice with others.
    Being pregnant – I avoid anything soy.
    When not pregnant – I avoid processed soy – so yes, soy milk is out.
    Yes I eat eggs 5-7 mornings a week.
    I also have organic butter which is used on occasion.
    This is so good Holly – and the part about being consistent is so true. It’s what kept me stuck for years! (ugh..I hate to even think about that) I went around the same mountain more times than I care to think about.
    And you’re right too about how we deceive ourselves sometimes into thinking we’re eating healthy when we’re really not. Very good post…very good advice. Thank you!
    Yes! Great post Holly, thanks! Hmmm…. time to get honest about what’s going into my mouth Loving it! Back on the ED dropping out wheat and dairy… I felt so good on it before, don’t know why I went back to my old habits (shakes head at self). Lesson well learnt!! :)
    Hi Holly
    Thanks for the great advice as usual!! But how much of cows milk exactly is bad for a diet?
    Great tips Holly. One other point I want to mention that I get asked about often regarding tips for great abs…Spot training doesn’t work! To solely focus on one area of the body while ignoring the remainder will not get you the results you want. Make great whole food choices and follow a fitness routine that uses your entire body. Be well!
