Hi Holly and Tyler,
Thanks for taking the time and initiative for creating a survival kit.
I am a teacher and a mom of 2 ( 2.5 and 4 yrs). They both go to school. I am out of the house by 7.15 in the mornings. I have to worry about their dinners everyday. Breakfast is getting better but i still struggle to get them to eat oatmeal. They love weetabix. Also Tyler, how did you eat such healthy foods when you were younger? What can I do to make my kids eat veggies and dips etc.
Holly, like so many other moms have asked, what do you do to wind kids down in the evenings? By the time i get home at 5 i am exhausted. The later they sleep the longer the cycle stays on.
Looking forward to hearing from you
Yaseena
Hi Holly and Tyler
I need ideas for my kids’ lunchbox (2.5 and 5 years), everyday it’s a slice of bread with peanut butter, apple, banana and yoghurt. My son now hates yoghurt because he eats it everyday. I really need some exciting ideas.

Hi Tyler~ What do you have to drink in your lunch box? My kids are good water drinkers, however, they do like to drink something w/flavor too. What ideas do you have? Thanks!
OK, This one may be out of your reach, but my biggest problem with back to school is the SCHOOL.
The lunches they provide are supposed to be healthy. Well, they are NOT. They have cut back on sweets–no sugar allowed, yet they continue to serve foods that are filled with fat. Let me share. Next week’s menu includes the following entrees (I copied it right off their website so excuse the caps): CRISPITO/BURRITO W/CHILI, SPAGHETTI WITH MEAT SAUCE, FISH STICKS, BEEF NACHO GRANDE, PIZZA, HOT DOG/OR CHILI DOG, SANDWICH, CHEESE STICKS WITH DIP DELI, CORN DOG NUGGETS, CHEF SALAD
Hmmm. Should we see how many times we can find hotdogs listed? Perhaps some yummy cheese sticks (fried, I’m sure). That’s always a good protein source for lunch. Don’t get me wrong–kids eat this stuff up, but it’s so BAD for you. I realize this stuff is easy to fix in bulk, but good grief. What are we doing to the masses? We’re just building them up for health problems.
Now please understand, they do throw in a veggie and a piece of fruit each day, but that stuff is optional. How many of the kids are going to pick a California blend veggie mix when they run through the line? Very, very sad.
School lunches could be yummy, healthy and GOOD. How do we fight the system? Thanks.
Hello to all the moms, Holly and Tyler,
I am so happy to see that other people have the same concerns and questions as me. My son started kindergarten last week and my daughter will go to nursery this coming week. I have to pack lunches for both of them. They have to be easy to eat, tasty, not messy and healthy. I think I’ve done relatively well this first week, but every single night I have to think hard to come up with a different idea.
Any suggestions about what I could pack instead of sandwiches? Right now I usually pack a savoury sandwich (jam, chocolate spread and all other sweets are forbidden by the school), a fruit (apple or dried fruit) and sometimes some extra crackers or yoghurt. I also packed a cold pasta salad one day.
I am looking forward to reading your ideas!
Thank you!
Gabriella
I have the hardest time incorporating protein into my daughter’s breakfast!! She doesn’t want eggs. That would be too easy. I’m needing something fast, that she’ll actually eat. Lunches too, I’d like to pack lunch, but I need ideas. It’s the hardest thing!
One of my goals for this school year is to have a list of healthy lunches and snacks for my kids! We do ok, generally, but there isn’t a lot of variety (mac & cheese, turkey roll-ups on tortillas with shredded cheese, canned soup). I want to have a “snack cupboard” for my kids, so they can help themselves to healthy snacks at snacktime without pestering me about it, and without me getting told, “I don’t want that!” I am tired of running through all of the snacking options only to be told no, that’s not what I want!
Thanks!
Hi Holly and Tyler!
I was just trying to think of breakfast and lunch ideas yesterday. Every morning, my kids want to eat pancakes or cereal. We have ruled out pop tarts, and sugar cereal, but it is still not enough to give them the energy they need. Also, last year for lunch, my 7 year old ate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich every day! I told her that is not going to happen in 2nd grade, but I am at a loss about what to pack in her lunch.
Also, do you have any ideas for after school? A good snack, wind down time and homework?
I love you guys! Thanks for your help!
Alison
Tyler and Holly,
Lunch, lunch, lunch! Taylor is allergic to, well, tons of foods. So, we always pack lunch and it is always something really healthy – but we are ready to hear some of your ideas. We have become expert at changing ingredients about to make certain that they are safe for Taylor but still are close to what his friends may be packing!
Thanks a lot. We love you!

Great idea! I could always use new ideas for lunches. A fruit is no problem, either are beverages but the protein is a trick sometimes!
Hello!
So school will start for us on Monday for my 2nd grader and Tuesday for my preschooler. I will be interested in seeing if our schedule from morning, to getting to school, after school, homework and evening will actually go smoothly. One thing I have noticed is I may have about 30-45 minute pockets in my day from taking and picking up my girls at different times…one goes at 7:50am and the other at 9am and for the afternoon I pick up one at 2pm and the other at 3pm. Any suggestions on how to really use those minutes to make our week go by smoothly? Sometimes I will be at home and sometimes in the car.
Thanks!
Good luck with the new school year, Tyler!
Hi Tyler I would love to hear what healthy ideas you have in you lunch box. Lorie and I try but end up getting stuck, we are limited as there is a no nuts policy at school due to allergens. Plus fun yummy after school snacks to keep the energy up for her swimming and karate.
Thanks for your help.
Karen and Lorie
Hi, Holly and Tyler!
We homeschool and we seem to get in the same breakfast and lunch rut after awhile. My 10 year old is allergic to nuts, so snacks get mundane too! Would love to have Tyler’s thoughts on what he loves to eat! Maybe some ways to make things easier and self-serving in the morning.
I am looking forward to all you two have to share with us!
I homeschool too and struggle with lunch ideas for my 3-year old, 8-year old as well as myself. So, healthy, kid-friendly and fun meal ideas that I can enjoy too are most welcome. Thanks Holly and Tyler!!
Hi Holly & Tyler!
I would love some ideas on homeade breakfast bars/energy bars that would be healthy and easy to grab on the go for 2 boys who can be picky eaters at times:) Something with a good amount of protein and healthy whole grains…thanks!
Susan
I have two teenagers who are BUSY so add that to working full-time, I want to be sure they are eating healthy. My daughter has a hard time eating breakfast in the morning as everything upsets her stomach, so that is a challenge. But my biggest challenge is to find quick healthy meals for dinner.

Hi,
I am a Mom who is “stuck-in-the-rut” of sending the same or similar lunches every day (sandwich, veggie sticks and piece of fruit). I k now that this is healthy; but, the format gets boring for my 6 year old son who is entering first grade this year. Any suggestions how to make it more exciting?
