Thanks, Holly! As always, so informative and giving us moms the information we need to make informed decisions and empowered choices for ourselves and for the health and education of our children.
Sorry, but you make me laugh…I love how ‘straight-forward’ you are and how you just ‘cut out the crap’ and just say it like it is.
And, I love, love, love how balanced you are! Yeah — finally a fitness professional that ‘gets it’ with regard to balance! It’s so much more realistic…and fun!
Thanks so much for sharing where to get some foods…I so appreciated it and will be even more on the hunt for a few of those things that I wasn’t able to find before.
Thanks Holly for showing us how to live a balanced life! You are so right that it’s all about moderation. If Carter couldn’t go to a birthday party every once in awhile and have pizza it would be so sad for him. So I’m glad that you show us how to live balanced lifes. Thank you!!
Oh and great point about hiding veggies in food! I was thinking about doing that and now will reconsider. It’s true that he wouldn’t know how to eat then. Never thought of that. I know that should be obvious but it wasn’t to me:) So thank you! And I think the one thing that makes your plan so easy to follow is that it is so balanced. So why wouldn’t we let our kids diets be balanced too? I couldn’t be perfect 100% of the time so we can’t expect that from our kids. Thanks for the reminders.
LOL…I agree with Debi! I love you, girl! I can’t wait to put the focus back on me and start a new routine!
Oh…and I love how you can hear the cicadas in the background!
I was just about to submit a question about where to purchase the snack foods, so I was thrilled to see this video! Very doable, thank you!
Great video.. again! I have the books that talk about hiding veggies and such in your child’s food and I will say it helped me feel better about the switch to healthier foods. I still offered the good stuff, but felt better about the quality of the other foods they would eat. I don’t have to hide anything anymore, they have really come around and started to enjoy the new flavors. They now see and don’t mind the spinach or avocado and so on going into their smoothies. Thomas (age 7) is all about making sure things are healthy now, it’s great!
I think your blog is wonderful and I’m so glad I found it!
One question…. what about soy milk as far as milk products go?
Great question – I am sure there are versions of soy that are okay – but this is an area that also has a lot of controversy – I am not so willing to give soy to Tyler as I am not confident in the effects it will have. I have found that we rarely use milk based meals and when we do – almond and goat milk has been more than sufficient.
Thanks, Holly- this was very encouraging. I am still in the process of changing our family eating habits and it can be hard work but I am encouraged by your approach and attitude about it all!
We had not done a lot of milk because of a few babies who were allergic to it…we have recently started with the organic milk and some of my kids like it too much. I limit it to a glass a day but I would love to read more facts and info about milk. If you have any resource suggestions I would love it! (websites, trusted books, etc.?)
Thanks again!
Amy
HOlly, thanks for the video and info. I know that your teaching/coaching is aimed toward women, but my husband needs some help, too. #1 – can he do these workouts, too? OR #2 – where would you direct him for male support?
thanks
Lisa
Great question Lisa,
and the quick and simple answer is yes. But as my husband has pointed out – no guy wants to share that he is getting fit following the Fit Yummy Mummy program. There are plenty of plans and programs online written by men for men. Just two that I always suggest are :
Turbulence Training
Fit and Busy Dad
Let me know if you have any other questions!
Holly
Holly – great information – thanks for taking it the extra step and offering more explanation. I want to say that I had my two sons, ages almost 7 and almost 4, watch Tyler’s videos – they were so excited to see that they ate quite a few of the same foods as Tyler – when the videos were over both of them yelled “We want to watch another one!” So a big thank you to Tyler – I especially appreciate how he stressed the importance of water! All my children have Klean Kanteen water bottles, but they like to have them by their bed at night – I keep trying to tell them they need it throughout the day too – that juice is limited to one glass in the morning, but they don’t like it hear it from me – well they finally ‘got it’ after listening to Tyler!
One question I had – almond milk – do you have a preferred brand? Do you use the unsweetened kind, or vanilla?
Thanks again for providing such a wonderful service to us moms
Hello Holly!
Thanks for such great information. I try to follow as much as I can from your advice, eventhough I can´t find many of these things in my country. If you do have time in the future to let us know where we can learn more about milk please share it with us. My husband tries real hard to loose weight, but his nutritionist hasn´t said anything bad about milk. My girls are great fans of milk too, but I just don´t have a good explanation as to why they should not drink so much. I´d appreciate any guidance on that. Thanks!
great video Holly! Thanks! I still do hide veggies in my girls food, but I give them lots of whole veggies and fruits too, I just do it to get extra nutrition in to them. I am just in the process of eliminating dairy from my family’s diet. I know you show a lot of cheese and yogurt in your videos, do you still eat this and just avoid milk, or do you avoid all dairy?
Love that you promote balance Holly! It’s so important to teach our kids that moderation and balance is key to a healthy diet. I don’t want my children to develop a complex about eating a cookie or having a fast food meal as something “wrong”. I want them to understand that those types of foods aren’t the healthiest things to eat, but it’s okay to eat them once in awhile.
Thanks Holly. I love all your videos, and the support you give us all. I know I’ve learned a lot, and have made changes one step at a time. My kids are loving the horizon stick yogurts. We’ve considered getting a goat, but the kids didn’t like the taste, it may take a while and even for myself, but I am open to doing something different to create different results. Today I made some carrot muffins, from some pulp I had left because I had juiced up some organic carrots, I think once in a while is o.k.
What a relief, Holly, that you recommend we gradually increase our nutritious eating. To start at square one and tackle everything would be about impossible.
Oh, no! I used to hide mushrooms in the kids’ foods! They complained that they don’t like them. I’ll start chopping them into larger pieces and then it’s not officially “hiding” it in their food, it’s right in there with the minced garlic and chopped onion.
Holly,
I tried hiding veggies in my children’s food, and guess what? They developed an even sharper eye! My 5 year old “discovered” the slices of zucchini in our potato and onion fritatta and declared it “yuck”. I tried to hide the slices by peeling the zucchini (which I’d usually just chop unpeeled). Same goes with grated carrot in bolognaise sauce. My 4 year old sees it in there and won’t eat his food without a fuss.
I find they eat a lot more fruit than vegetables, but most people recommend a higher vegetable to fruit ratio. Is this really important? They are very happy to eat fruit for their snacks, so I’d rather let them have an apple or a couple slices of melon than have them declare they aren’t hungry any more after two bites of a carrot stick.
Great video and loads of good information. Seeing the Stretch Island Fruit Leathers (probably not what they are called now) reminds me of twenty years ago when I would buy them for my boys. I belonged to a food co-op which was the only way to get healthy food back then in my little town. My kids loved them! My, how time flies! Gay
Hi Holly!
Okay, so I’m ready for a change! I am the mom of 4 kids! My youngest just turned two.
I have always been thin. I was that annoying mom who was back in her size 8 jeans three weeks after giving birth. I actually left the hospital with number 4 weighing less than when I got pregnant). I was always happy with my body. But, then an odd thing happened. I turned 35! UGH! Once I stopped breastfeeding my youngest (about 10 months ago). I started gaining weight. I weigh more now than I ever did at 9 months pregnant. I’m still in what most would consider a “normal” weight, but I don’t feel normal. I’m carrying all the extra weight around my belly and hips. I couldn’t fit into any of last summer’s clothes. Gaining weight isn’t cheap. So, it’s time for some work. No more flab, no more muffin top! A friend of mine (and my son’s awesome speech therapist) has an AMAZING body! Seriously, even women can’t stop looking at her! She told me about your program yesterday and here I am. So, the kids are back in school and I’m back in action! My goal is to work out each morning as soon as my two big kids walk out the door at 7:05 a.m. I’ll be in the shower by 7:30! I can do this, right!?!? I figure I’ll stop by here for encouragement and the kick in the a** that I need every now and then!
Thanks for featuring REAL moms on your website with real busy lives. It makes me feel like even I can loose the flab.
Christine
p.s. Is there a chat room for your followers? That would be encouraging!
This was such a great video Holly! Thank you so much for caring about us and our children and making sure that we have the tools to teach our children how to live a healthy life! I can’t wait to see the dinner video!
I love your enthusiasm Christine and I am SUPER proud of you for Taking Action!!!
And yes there is a place where all the FYMs meet to chat and support one another – ClubFYM.com
Everyone who purchases Fit yummy mummy gets a FREE trial too!!!
Hope to see you there!
Thanks Holly for your support! Hey, I heard something recently that I want to get your feedback on. I was watching something on t.v. with a nutritionist (Oprah I think). This woman said that it’s important to feel hunger pangs. She said your body does not burn calories or fat until you feel hunger and it’s a good idea to get used to the feeling and let it last for a while. I do think it’s easy to eat when one is not hungry at all, which isn’t right, but it doesn’t seem right to ignore our body’s natural cues. I look at my kids and see that they eat when they are hungry and stop when they are full. I think that’s a good habit to be in, but should we push past hunger to uncomfortable to burn fat? I’m thinking no. How about you?
Seems everyone has their own angle – I however do not believe in this nor teach this. Through my personal experience and the experience of working with thousands of women, the most effective strategy is to eat based on time not hunger. Once hunger strikes, it sure is difficult to make supportive decisions.
But it is up to each of us to find an eating plan that works. This is just not what I have found to be successful.
I loved this video – thanks so much!
One thing I wanted to mention about the whole milk subject related to many people’s concern that eliminating milk means struggling to get calcium in your diet – remember WHY milk has so much calcium in it! It’s because the cows (especially the ones that are pasture-fed) are eating calcium-rich PLANTS! So we CAN get all the calcium we need from plants too and not be so dependent on the dairy products that can be mucus-producing and inflammatory in our bodies. There’s a wealth of info out there in published books as well as online if anyone is interested in learning more.
Thanks Brandae!
YES just like cardio is not the end all be all answer to fat loss – milk is not the end all be all source of calcium – unfortunately we realize this all too late.
Glad to have your support!
I live in a smaller city and don’t have tons of options for grocery shopping. We do have a Wal-mart and Sam’s Club and that is about it. I can find lots of healthy options there, but I just found some of the snacks mentioned in your video on Amazon.com of all places! Since I have an prime membership, the shipping is free and the product gets to me in 2 days.
I wanted to thank you for this video! I loved watching Tyler give him tutorial of healthy after school snacks. My boys enjoyed watching it with me. I think you do MUCH better than we do at providing healthy alternatives. My snack shelf isn’t terrible…but it’s not good. We always have fresh fruit, but my kids also love cheetos and chips on a regular basis. Your video inspires me to try harder even if I do have to spend a few more bucks. I do have a Big Lots near by and I’m heading there tonight to see what I can find. Thanks again for all the helpful info!
I didn’t see any processed food in Tyler’s video, so I say BOOOO to the mom that criticized you! You rock!!!
Thank You, Holly, ever so much!
I absolutely love your website, I have consciously and deliberately introduced changes in my children’s diet – and my own. I sometimes feel like a bit of a sneak for using all the valuable resources you are giving for free (!) online, all those cool and very inspiring (wow, you are so beautiful!) videos (and thanks to Tyler as well, it makes it so much easier when you see an actual child eating healthy foods). I’m in no position right now to afford paid coaching, but I truly hope you get what you deserve for helping so many women in such a selfless and giving way. I’ve bought dumbbells after watching some of your videos and have started to do at least 15-20 minutes of exercise a day. I’m not writing all this to go “me, me, me”, but just to give some feedback so that you know how many people are actually benefiting and getting inspired by what you do.
