I’m Going to Hollywood – Fit Yummy Mummy Style

Leaving this morning from Louisville on a 7 AM flight.

This is my second event with the America’s Premiere Experts coaching group I am a part of. Fun way to network and learn from others as well as help to spread the word about Fit Yummy Mummy.

My 1st meeting was back in September – we went to Orlando for a professional photo shoot and an interview with USA Today.

This time we will be spending all day Friday doing media coaching for on Saturday we get to sit behind a TV camera and do a 10 minute interview about our businesses. Little nervous…but do so much better when I do not think about it too much.

So yesterday had to go shopping to
1. not only find something acceptable to wear on camera but
2. we are invited to a private party at the Magic castle – so needed a cocktail dress.

I will not get back until late Sunday night…so if I am a bit delayed in getting back to your questions or to your posts please understand I will do my best to catch up as soon as I return.

Making Mistakes Along the Way

Looking at Holly Rigsby, Certified Personal Trainer and the creator of Fit Yummy Mummy, you would probably think that she was blessed with a great figure and has probably been athletic all her life. One might also assume that this bundle of energy has ALWAYS been fit and doesn’t know what it’s like to struggle with weight issues.

You would be wrong.

From college to parenthood, Holly continually struggled with her weight, gaining 30 pounds her freshman year of college and gaining 50 pounds while she was pregnant with her son! It took her awhile to put the pieces of the puzzle together to create her ultimate healthy lifestyle. And just like the successful clients that she now coaches, Holly made a lot of mistakes along the way.

But I’ll let HER tell you the whole story!

Holly Rigsby is an amazing woman, coach, wife and mom. She is also a great friend of mine and SO much fun to talk to. Below is an AWESOME interview I had with Holly on Wednesday night, February 25, 2009. I’m just too BUSY to workout today!!!

….I have a million things to do

….I slept in today

….its too cold

….I don’t feel like it

….my kids won’t let me workout

…I just don’t have time

As a Busy Moms Fat Loss coach I truly have heard it all….and I am here to prove you DO have time to get a super fast workout in…even if it is just 5 minutes!

You ALL know the benefits or working out…and the benefits of staying consistent…well regardless of what the day hold….you DO have 5 minutes for you.

And to prove it… I filmed myself performing a tabata based workout on Valentine’s Day for the Fit Yummy Mummy’s ….JUST to show you it can be done.

Despite my crazy busy schedule for today, well looking ahead…this entire weekend – with coaching calls, the first ever IYCA Live Event in Louisville, out of town guests coming to stay…cleaning the house, managing my online businesses – finding time hang out with Tyler before he leaves to spend time with his Dad for the weekend….Enough to make anyone’s head spin - I am STILL able to FIND the time for a mere 5 minutes for me!

I took the Valentine’s day workout and performed it right here in my basement -next to my desk.

Now it is your turn!


This type of workout….known as Tabatas….is super challenging. If you are new to working our or new to intervals, please Consult your physician before you begin. Once all is good, start out at an intensity that is appropriate to your fitness level.

What I am sharing with you is a 4 minute tabata sequence.

- You will alternate between 20 s of work and 10 s of rest

- You will perform this 30 s interval 8x for 4 total minutes

I chose to alternate between DB swings and Mountain Climbers…working at an intensity that matches my fitness level.

While this is just some fun music I added to make the video more interesting, I did workout to a soundtrack that times the 10 and 20 second intervals for me. if you are interested in a downloading a sample of this soundtrack, I have one waiting for you at

Tell me more about Tabatas!

Everybody’s got at least 5 minutes!

As busy moms, there will be days when we simply do not have enough time for a full 15 to 30-minute workout. Therefore the typical approach we take is to just skip the workout altogether mistakenly believing that no significant results can occur in less time anyways.

This could not be further from the truth! Well get ready for Tabatas – 4 minutes of high-intensity interval training, featuring the breakthrough Tabata Protocol that Japanese scientists used to compare the effects of only 4 minutes of high-intensity interval training to a slow, long 60-minute steady-state aerobic alternative, ideal for a Busy Mom Workout. They found greater fat loss and greater improvements in overall conditioning with the following 4-minute interval routine versus the full hour of aerobics!

It’s not about time…

It’s not about how many calories a machine “says” you burned…


The Top 4 Body Weight Tabata Exercises

No special equipment needed for this type of busy mom workout.

As you see in my video above, all I used is a dumbbell.

Don’t even have that?

Try out a body weight circuit.

Choose either one exercise below and perform it for the full duration of your workout OR feel free to switch to different exercises from round to round to mix things up and get a little more variety:


1.) Running in Place

2.) Jumping Jacks


3.) Burpees

4.) Squats

Note- Feel free to perform this protocol with any mode of cardio exercise (e.g. outdoor/treadmill running, cycling, etc.).

How to Use Tabatas

Perform this method of cardio workouts only on days:

- When you truly have NO TIME for the prescribed full-length 10 to 15 minute Fit Yummy Mummy Interval workouts.

- For an extra metabolic boost during the day to accelerate fat loss (immediately in the morning or 4-6 hours before/after your main workout of the day)

- Before a “free meal” to serve as a bit of damage control so that your body is primed to use the extra calories from this meal for muscle growth and recovery while minimizing fat-storage (don’t push this too far – this is not an excuse to go hog-wild!)

Note: This is an intense workout.

Your body will need to recover like any other challenging workout.
This is just an example of a routine you can perform based on the above variables.

Allow me to share with you the question that makes me CRINGE!!!

Every so often I get this question and I really make an effort to pause for a moment, collect my thoughts and smile.

“Okay, so how do I get my kids to eat healthy?”

Additional concerns shared sound like this…

~ My children do not like vegetables

~ It’s too expensive to buy healthier options

~ I don’t have the time

~ I can’t deprive them of their favorite foods?!

My stance on this topic is extremely strong ~ and no my son is not a health nut freak ~ even though last spring he had a unexpected seizure.

As Mothers we play the most powerful role in our children’s lives.

Children learn what they live and our actions speak volumes!

Yes, I do agree, that it can be difficult to make the change to a healthier eating plan BUT it does not have to be the battle we all make it out to be.

Here are some tips the Fit Yummy Mummy’s have found to make the whine-free transition

1 ~ Lead by Example

Enough said.

2 ~ Create an illusion of Control

Give them the option of choice- invite them to help plan out the menus for the week. This has always worked well with Tyler.

3 ~ Keep the junk out of the house

Replace with fresh fruits, veggies, nuts, cheese stick, etc. We have designated a snack box in the pantry and the fridge. If its not in the house – your kids will not ask for itl

4 ~ Get this…Children LOVE to Learn!

Instead of telling them to eat their broccoli or Else! Explain why. Get them involved…make healthy eating an enjoyable topic! Don’t be afraid to share your own story -why you made the choice to begin to live a healthier lifestyle – they will look up to you and respect you Even MORE!

My son Tyler thrives off this approach. He is now able to identify when others are making good choices and Not so good choices…this opens up a great conversation.

5 ~ Plan for “Once in a whiles”

This is totally Tyler’s term for when it is okay to have a not so healthy option. Yes, he is a normal kid who enjoys a McDonald’s Happy Meal or fresh baked chocolate chip cookies….but he understands the consequences of eating like this every day.

Healthy eating for our children is all about balance and moderation.

6 ~ Stand your ground

You are ultimately in control. Children NEED boundaries and the NEED our guidance.

Think about this….

What is convenient for us now…

is harder for our children in the long run.

Shannon put this question out there after reading Allison Bolton’s One Year FYM Anniversary success story.

Here’s a small glimpse at what the ladies are posting at :

groups of muscles at once are way more effective
than spending hours exercising every little
muscle group individually.
