Do You Have Yours Ready To Go?

Staying FIT while on vacation is one of the most frequently asked questions this time of year.

While I have dozens of strategies and tips to share, best to start with the most important one.

Your Cooler

While staying active is one way to combat vacation weight gain, you really need nothing more to take along other than your own body for mini vacation-style workouts. And yes, I’ll be showing you some of my favorite body weight moves later this week!

However, what you EAT requires a bit more planning and has a far greater impact on your ability to stay on track while you are away.

Yes, Vacations are meant to be enjoyed….
but overindulging every single day can pack on the pounds. One of the unnecessary places we make poor choices on what to eat is WHILE we are in route to our destination spot.

It never fails, while on our way to our destination spot, we either find ourselves at the Starbucks or McDonald’s in the airport or on the highway, taking in far too many calories before we even get there!

Don’t let this happen to you.

You can get this junk food anytime. Save your vacation calories for more exciting and unique treats.

Avoid the on-the-go temptations by making a point to pack travel snacks to help curb your appetite and allow you to stay on track.

This is why the COOLER is your #1 Travel Fit Kit Tool.

What will you pack in YOUR Cooler?

I get a lot of flack from my friends for constantly lugging food with me, but I am healthy and don’t spend the money they do on ‘garbage’ foods. I use the word ‘garbage’ becuase that is how I feel after eating them.

My ‘cooler’ (my large handbag) has almonds, dried cranberries, oranges, water, pre-made protein shakes, carrots, celery and peanut butter. I’m hypoglycemic, so even a few hours is a big deal.

This such a great reminder of what we “should” be packing along. When I do pack snacks while we are travelling, I generally back Cheese Strings, Apples, Bananas, Grapes, Blueberries, Almonds or other trail mixes and water.

I travel a lot for business but with plane travel nowadays I’m very restricted on what I can carry. However, I always pack a few cereal bars and raisins to avoid buying expensive & unhealthy room service meals when I arrive in a strange place and feel a bit peckish. I also carry tea bags and some sachets of decent instant coffee for those tired moments!

I am actually on vacation right now and I shopped at Trader Joes before coming to Wyoming. I packed Lara bars which have about 3 ingredients in them and are all natural, raw almonds, raw sunflower seeds and 100% fruit leathers. I also bought a case of water and had to buy another because my husband and I are going through it so fast. Doing O.K. with the eating part – not great but am feeling good about my snack choices. So much cheaper to buy this stuff ahead of time.

For sure water first thing……bars to snack on and plenty of dried fruit and some of my diabetic ‘sweets’……everyone enjoying the sweets without knowing they are actually suger-free.:)

  6. Henriette says:

I try to pack lots of fruit as my kids luckily loves that, especially grapes, bananas, apples. And lots of water. We usually take sandwiches (health bread) with ham, tomato and cheese.

  7. Donna says:

Apples, yogurt, other fruits, nuts and fruits trail mixes and a organic dark chocolate candy bar :)

  8. Catherine says:

Being human and living in a ‘dry country’!! I know I will stray… and have a glass of wine or maybe two?? Maybe its just having the choice to do so… after three months? but the novelty soon passes… then its will be water, nuts and maybe some naughties… as there is NO Starbucks, Burger King or anything here!!! Oh woe… I wonder if there is any hope for ME???Will keep trying!

I like to take hardboiled eggs along , and mini-cucumbers; they’re like fruit but with less sugar and sooo refreshing on the road or train.

  10. Susan says:

Celery, nuts, apples, water, water, water (ha), apples, grapes, hummus, dried apricots…I’m a rolling grocery store. :)

  11. Diana says:

almonds, apples, water, lara bars, baby carrots

I’m so happy I took the time to scan over these suggestions. We have always just grabed what we could find on the road. Now that we have been eating healthier, I don’t want to ruin that with our vacation!! We leave Saturday for two weeks and 10 hr drive each way. So seeing all the suggestions has made me go grab our small cooler out of the garage! I’m going to get packing tonight! I’ve already picked up cooler packs to take into the parks with us so we can avoid too much “park” food. Can’t wait to see Holly’s suggestions later today. Woo Hoo!!

  13. Marie says:

I don’t travel much but as a Soldier I am in the field and find myself being forced into unhealthy food choice situations. I try to bring protien bars with me and focus on the fruits and veggies provided vs the starches and fried meats.

  14. Patricia says:

I always pack my fav yogurt dip which can also be used as salad dressing and at fast food places I can use my dressing or dip and most places have grilled chicken now and I just throw away the bun. I also travel with protein powder which can be mixed with water, nuts like almonds and walnuts and apples and carrot sticks. I take oatmeal, other fruit and my milk and cheese for while at someone else’s home. if at a hotel we try to find those that have fridges and often have coffee makers for boiling water or better yet have a microwave. And I don’t worry if they have comments.

Our family’s favorites are string cheese (always!), fresh and dried fruit, almonds, carrots, V-8, protein pretzels (for the kids), protein powder (packaged in individual servings for a quick shake up with water), and a few protein bars, which are a bit of an indulgence without blowing it nutritionally. Feeding the kids our “car picnics” save time, money, calories, and keep the kids busy while on the road.

  16. Lori Lambert says:

We love to take along many of what the others have already said plus beef jerky.

  17. Lori says:

I have pretty much everything listed above…especially love apples/bananas with nut butter of some kind. I also like to pack small baggies of dry oatmeal with various mixings (dried fruit, nuts, flax) and protein powder. You only need to add hot water which you can get at any convenience store.

  18. Isabella says:

on road trips we always bring homemade sandwiches, fruits, veggies, Kashi granola bars, and lots of water. We always try to get a hotel with a fridge and when we get there we find the grocery store and stock it with healthy foods. we have breakfast in the room and bring snacks and lunches along. Lately we have also tried to get a kitchenette as well to cook most of the dinners there.

  19. Evelyn says:

EGGS, few almonds, a piece of melon cut up or an apple. I keep in my drawer Fiber One and Dove dark chocolate. Most days of the week I bring tuna salad, chicken salad, or ham, turkey and Swiss cheese on a 100 calorie multi grain bread.

At the office I keep a mini blender to make protein shakes.

Lately for a quick satisfying snack an egg white with olive oil, salt and pepper, a piece of melon and about 1/2 c fiber one with a cup of green tea fills me up!

  20. Preparation and making good decisions are keys to successful wellness. I am almond girl myself…oh an organic peanut butter and rasberry jelly sadnwiches on dark german wheat…I may get in the car now!

  21. Kate says:

    I never leave without it!

  22. shehrebanoo says:

I take whole wheat parathas (unleavened bread) stuffed with vegetables and spices and they keep well for many days in a cool bag.
